Bal Harbour, FL – October 8, 2015 – Fashion Project celebrated the opening of the third exhibition at Bal Harbour Shops, FP:03 The Past, with a preview of the new exhibition and discussion with the co-curators. As part of the celebration of Bal Harbour Shops 50th Anniversary, the exhibition explores pivotal moments in fashion from 1915 to 1965, the year Bal Harbour Shops opened. Why does the past matter? The exhibition addresses this question by juxtaposing and celebrating two seemingly disconnected yet surprisingly similar times in fashion history: the Edwardian era and the revolutionary 1960s. Following the preview reception, London-based curator Judith Clark and co-curator/fashion historian Amy de la Haye led a conversation at Books & Books about their collaboration on The Past and the ideas behind the exhibition. Guests of the event included Judith Clark, Amy de la Haye, Barbara Hulanicki, Cathy Leff and Elysze Held. FP03: The Past is the third in a series of exhibitions organized by Judith Clark and will remain on view through November 5. Fashion Project is an experimental space sponsored by Bal Harbour Shops and located on its third level. Its curatorial projects and programs explore fashion and the culture of what we wear. World Red Eye caught up with JJ Wilson, who gave us a close look to how Kit and Ace started and what they are hoping to do through their comfort wear.

WRE: Tell us about how Kit and Ace started?

JW: We looked at our friends and family – and ourselves – and saw a group of people living busy, “full-contact” lives who were in search of functional clothing that could keep up, but was still stylish and luxurious. With Shannon’s institutional knowledge, we were able to create an entirely new category of apparel, which we call Technical Luxury™, by elevating luxury fabrics (like cashmere) with technical fibres to make them machine-washable and have added stretch.

WRE: What sets your brand apart from other brands that have a similar idea?

JW: Kit and Ace is turning the athleisure trend on its head. Rather than making athletic clothing that can be worn day to day, we’re making streetwear with attributes suited to movement. We recognized a void in the luxury apparel industry, which led us to create Qemir™, our family of proprietary fabrics that combine technical attributes with luxury fibres. We saw a need for products that offer comfort and functionality without sacrificing style.

WRE: Where do you guys draw inspiration from in your designs?

JW: We’re inspired by and design for the creative class, which to us includes anyone driven by the impact they have on the world around them. These people lead busy lives and need clothing that can take you from morning to night.

WRE: Tell us about some of the fabrics you use? 

JW: All of our products are made from proprietary fabrics within the Qemir™ family. Our foundational fabric is called Technical Cashmere™. To create it, we’ve taken the soft, luxurious aspects of traditional cashmere and enhanced it with technical fibres to make the fabric more durable, machine-washable, and dryer-friendly.

WRE: Who comes up with the styles? What does that creative process look like?

JW: Shannon leads the Kit and Ace design team and she’s the brain behind our design process. She has an incredible wealth of knowledge, which she and the rest of the team apply to create luxurious, technical pieces for busy people.   We’re inspired by the creative class – which includes those closest to us, like friends and family – and we seek to make clothing that both simplifies and enhances their lives.

WRE: Describe the kind of person who is rocking your clothing?

JW: Because we’ve grown so quickly over the past year, our customer base covers a wide range of people all over the world.

WRE: What kind of message do you want Kit and Ace styles to give out?

JW: There isn’t a particular message behind our clothes, but we know that our customers have an appreciation and consideration for luxurious, quality products.

WRE: Where do you see Kit and Ace 10 years from now?

JW: We’re a little more than a year old and we’ve already opened 43 shops, so it’s hard to say what we’ll be doing in ten years. We hope still be at the forefront of innovative, technical design.

The Montreal-based womenswear luxury brand held the bash during the Wynwood Art Walk as a tribute to the collection’s influence of art and design. The party didn’t miss a beat as DJ Michelle Leshem spun the latest hits keeping the fashionable guests including artist Marc Seguin, model and style blogger Jenny Lopez, jewelry designer Soledad Lowe, Angie Ferrer and designer Angeles Almuna dancing all evening.

The boutique, located in Wynwood (2311 NW 2nd Avenue) is the brand’s first U.S retail location. Inspired by the raw, industrial and creative spirit of the design district Marie chose to establish her U.S retail presence in a city that merges culture, art, and fashion into one community.

Coral Gables, FL – November 10, 2015 – It was an afternoon of exploring the latest trends as Neiman Marcus Coral Gables hosted Creative Director Joseph Altuzarra, of ALTUZARRA, for an exclusive lunch and fashion show. Joseph presented his Spring 2016 Collection to over 40 guests, including hosts, Gianconda Baltodana, Evangeline Delgado, and Jenine Howard.

World Red Eye was able to catch up with Altuzarra, where he told us a bit about how he first got his start in the fashion world, as well as what we can find him doing when he visits Miami.

WRE: How did you first get your start in design?

JA: I entered design in an unconventional way. I didn’t study design at school, but instead took up Art History at Swarthmore. When I decided to go into fashion, I interned at Marc Jacobs and later worked for Proenza Schouler and Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy to gain experience, as well as apprenticing for a pattern maker, before starting my own brand.

The Altuzarra woman has a pragmatic approach to dressing.

WRE: Has your culture had an influenced your brand/design aesthetic?

JA: Growing up in Paris with a multicultural background (my mother is American-Chinese, and my father is French) has definitely informed Altuzarra’s aesthetic. The Altuzarra woman has a pragmatic approach to dressing, that feels very American, with a seductive and sexy outlook, which is quite French.

WRE: Where do you look for inspiration for each collection?

JA: It varies from season to season, from books to films. For Spring for example, I was inspired by exploring the Basque side of my heritage, along with celebrating the beauty and rawness of certain natural materials and textures.

WRE: What has been the most memorable moment of your career thus far?

JA: There have been many, but being able to grow, cultivate and work with a fantastic team has definitely been rewarding.

This feat of technology required two year of research and development. From design to production, each stage involved designers, engineers and watchmakers working in complete harmony to breathe life into this slim masterpiece.   The new timepiece launch coincided with the formal grand opening of the new US Boutique in Miami’s Design District. Tucked away in the Wynwood Art District, the freestanding sunglass boutique hosted an outdoor movie screening of Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth complete with chef inspired popcorn by BrownBag Popcorn Co, appropriately branded with the Warby Parker logo, tacos by Coyo Taco, delightful ceviche by newcomer GK Bistronomie, artisanal tartines by trendy Fooq’s, and craft cocktails by Rutte.   The relaxing event took place inside the Wynwood Walls, where christmas lights and a large movie screen illuminated the space. Guests were welcomed to lounge on puffs, sit in picnic tables and visit the unique store which hosts the entire collection of glasses.
