Q&A: Fashion for Breakfast at Cecconi’s – DANNIJO

1 -DSC_0504_new

Miami Beach, FL – April 2, 2015 – Soho Beach House was filled with trendsetters and fashionistas as another installment of the Fashion for Breakfast series took over Cecconi’s. Jewelry designer’s Danielle Snyder and Jodie Snyder Morel of DANNIJO along with moderator and writer Anastasia Koutsioukis spent time discussing the various aspects of jewelry world as well as the latest trends. Attendees munched on delicious breakfast as they listened on to the intriguing discussion.

World Red Eye had the opportunity to catch up with Danielle Snyder of DANNIJO before the breakfast, where we were able to hear a bit more about the brand, what it’s like working alongside her sister, as well as some of the upcoming trends we can expect.

1.5-DSC_0397_new

WRE: Tell us a bit about what sets the jewels of DANNIJO apart from other brands?

DS: The bib is our iconic silhouette that we’re really known for– it was inspired by my time in Kenya and the vibrant colors of the Maasai tribe. DANNIJO has a real spirit, heart and soul. The designs are inspired by our travels and each season we tell a new story. The brand’s DNA is always there, but the vibe always feels fresh – with a nod to the past.

2-DSC_0400_new

WRE: How closely do you two work together in creating new pieces?

DS: We have different aesthetics so we each bring a certain dynamic to the design process which makes for an ever-evolving collection. Jodie tends to be a bit more classic whereas I’m more bohemian, rock’n’roll inspired.

WRE: Hardest part about the creating process?

DS: That’s our favorite part! We love the challenge of creating newness while staying true to our brand’s DNA.

3-DSC_0388_new

WRE: What is the common thread in all DANNIJO collections?

DS: It’s always a mix of old and new; classic and bohemian. The collection can be worn by a range of personalities and really individualizes a look.

WRE: What kind of person is rocking the latest DANNIJO looks?

DS: The confident woman that can take the jewelry and make it her own. She has style, grace and personality– and she loves a statement.

4-DSC_0379_new

Danielle Snyder

WRE: What are some new Spring jewelry trends that shoppers and admirers should be on the lookout for?

DS: Bohemian bibs, dreamcatcher-like amulet necklaces, stackable cuffs and fringed jewelry.

WRE: What are some staple jewelry items everyone must have?

DS: A bib, a classic ear jacket, a solid armparty and an amulet necklace.

5-Jodie & Danielle Snyder3_new

Jodie Snyder Morel & Danielle Snyder

6-Jodie & Danielle Snyder_new

WRE: Do you find that jewelry trends tend to change with location? For example would people in Miami gravitate towards different pieces than someone would in New York or LA?

DS: Stylish people are everywhere, but perhaps it tends to be a bit more bohemian near the beach.

WRE: If you were to describe the DANNIJO brand in 3 words what would they be?

DS: Bold, bohemian and timeless

WRE: What is the ultimate “made it” moment for guys? Have you reached it yet?

DS: We’re still on the journey…

Q&A: Fashion Project at Bal Harbour Shops

1-DSC_2387

Bal Harbour, FL – April 9, 2015 – Bal Harbour Shops and Matthew Whitman Lazenby hosted a private reception and preview of Fashion Project, an experimental space on the Shops’ third floor curated by groundbreaking London-based exhibition designer Judith Clark. The only cultural space of its kind in a major U.S. retail center, Fashion Project is devoted to thought-provoking projects and public programs that explore fashion and the culture surrounding its design, innovation, production, and consumption. Guests enjoyed a first look of the inaugural exhibit while enjoying wine and bites courtesy of Makoto. Another initiative celebrating Bal Harbour Shops’ 50th anniversary, Fashion Project will be open daily to the public beginning April 10. On view through May 21, “FP01: The Exhibition,” showcases experimentation in fashion over the past century, with items such as a 1913 Ballet Russes’ costume and a 1999 futuristic, remote-control dress by Hussein Chalayan, along with unusual display structures that comment on the exhibition of fashion.

World Red Eye got the opportunity to catch up with the lady of the hour Judith Clark, where she chatted about the latest Fashion Project, as well as some of the highlights of her incredible career.

1.5-DSC_2244

2-DSC_2235

WRE: Tell us about the latest exhibition, FP01: The Exhibition, here at Bal Harbour Shops?

JC: As per it’s title it is about the idea of a fashion exhibition itself, so how the idea has evolved over time in museums and become ever freer. The exhibition is made up of six evolving cabinets each holding a precious object and each displayed according to different museum criteria.

3-DSC_2363

WRE: How do you go about choosing the garments to display, what’s the selection process like?

JC: I wanted to show garments that were precious but in ways that are different to the exquisite clothes for sale in Bal Harbour Shops – so they needed to be about projects over and above their wearability and style. A difficult task as so many of the pieces downstairs are infact museum-worthy!

WRE: Tell us about some of your favorite pieces from FP01: The Exhibition.

JC: All of the pieces are very dear to me and are from my personal collection. Perhaps the piece that stands out is the original Ballets Russes costume designed by Leon Bakst for Le Dieu Bleu. I studied the Ballets Russes and the impact those Diaighilev productions had on fashions in Paris at the time – the explosion of Orientalism.

4-DSC_2360

5-DSC_2484

WRE: What is the most challenging part about curating and putting together an exhibition?

JC: I suppose it is creating a narrative that will appeal to the broadest possible audience whilst remaining true to the exhibition’s conceptual  intentions. I always wonder what would appeal to both a child and a scholar at the same time.

6-DSC_2491

WRE: Where do you see the field of fashion curation heading within the next 10 to 20 years?

JC: I hope that it will broaden and that it will shed its fear of experimentation. Textile is very delicate and it has been used as a cover story for standing still, for a kind of fearful attitude to display. There are pieces that will never be shown as they are not allowed to be placed on a mannequin again as the strain on delicate fabrics would be too great – but what are we learning from keeping them away from the visitor’s gaze?

6.5-DSC_2286

WRE: Who are some of your fashion muses and why?

JC: I loved Anna Piaggi’s irreverent take on fashion’s histories as recounted through her Doppie Pagine section in Vogue Italia. The memory of her attitude to dress definitely hovers over a lot of my bravest decisions.

WRE: Has submerging yourself in the world of fashion made you consider creating or designing your own original work?

JC: This is a difficult question as I do and I don’t. I design installations which have ideas about and for dress embedded within them, but I would never call myself a designer or artist.

6.6-DSC_2315

WRE: Biggest career highlight?

JC: Working with the team at Artangel on The Concise Dictionary of Dress, it totally changed the way that I work – I will always be in their debt.

Rachael Russell

Miami, FL – April 16, 2015 – You may have seen her jetting around town to the latest boutique grand openings, behind the scenes at a magazine shoot or concocting the latest looks for Miami’s elite. What you may not know about local FORD fashion stylist Rachael Russell is that she is currently spearheading an incredible organization that is making a huge impact on not only people here in the community, but around the country. Russell’s fashion-filled world goes far beyond simply putting together a great outfit, it’s about making people of all walks of life feel great about themselves, and lets be honest, there’s nothing like the feeling of wearing an outfit to make you feel like a million bucks. Sadly for many people a new outfit is not always an option.

After taking her two younger brothers back-to-school shopping in 2010, Russell began to reminisce on some of her own exciting memories of picking out her looks to rock for the new school year. She quickly realized that not every student is able to afford that annual trip, and was inspired to create something that gives those less fortunate the opportunity to feel confident about his or her personal style. Founded by Russell, Style Saves all began with a small idea in mind: build confidence through clothes. Recognizing that there was a community with a love for style and desire to give back, Rachael hoped to inspire a new generation of philanthropists.

Style Saves raises funds through fashion-focused events in order to provide underprivileged students with clothing, shoes, and accessories. In collaboration with The Miami Foundation, Style Saves works with retail stores, designers and boutiques to provide these students with brand-new outfits for back-to-school. As a young entrepreneur, Russell’s focus is on youth, knowing that by instilling confidence from an early age, the opportunities for success are endless. With a hand-selected board comprised of influential and philanthropic professionals from a wide range of industries, each member utilizes their network of contacts to spread awareness about the initiatives at hand and garner the right crowd at each event.

Style Saves works with several well-known organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, Irie Foundation, The Lotus House, Honey Shine, Girl Power, and has strong partnerships with luxury partners in fashion, liquor and hospitality industries. In collaboration with the Miami Foundation, Style Saves works with retail stores, designers and boutiques to provide students with a personally styled, new outfit for their first day of school.

What’s unique about Style Saves is that they take a true interest into the personal styles of their students and clients, making a point to find out their favorite musicians, icons and idols are to ensure each person is left feeling comfortable and happy. “Seeing the looks on the kids faces as they’re able to leave our events with brand new clothing, shoes and accessories is really cool,” exclaims Russell, “Additionally, being able to provide parents and caretakers in our community with the support they so desperately need is equally rewarding.”

Although Style Saves has been making an incredible impact on children and teens around the country they are still facing one difficult aspect of running an organization, fundraising.“We want to help so many more students than we’re able to, but are working hard on finding more opportunities to raise the capital to extend our efforts,” says Russell. Style Saves is always seeking new clothing, shoes and accessories to accommodate their students. Fundraising activities include various social and fashion events, which help garner funds and raise awareness for the organizations cause and most importantly—the children.

Miami, FL – April 16, 2015 – As much a tribute to art and design as to couture fashion, Louis Vuitton’s stunning new emporium ushers in a vibrant era of sophisticated shopping and high style both inside and out. Aside from offering the complete world of Louis Vuitton leather goods, ready-to-wear, shoes, accessories, watches and fine jewelry, the architectural gem boasts an aluminum paneled facade created by Japanese architect Jun Aoki in collaboration with Mirei Uchibe. It is an abstract representation of Louis Vuitton’s iconic Damier pattern. The interior space portrays influences from Art Deco design and 1950’s Tropical Modernism, paying homage to the architectural history of Miami Beach. This, as well as original artworks, a gallery space and landscaped rooftop courtyard make this a must-visit travel destination.

Miami, FL – May 4, 2015 – Park Grove held an exclusive sartorial event at their penthouse sales gallery. Isabel Toledo, the Cuban-American fashion designer who has designed for the likes of Michelle Obama and MAC, hosted a private show of curated spring looks from her upcoming collection to a bevy of fashion influencers and other tastemakers. At the event, her husband, artist Ruben Toledo, who has designed postcards for Louis Vuitton, was also present. Ruben was commissioned by the developers to create original watercolor illustrations for the Park Grove brand that now grace the project’s website, brochures, and marketing collateral. Later in the evening, 35 looks from Isabel Toledo’s spring collection went down the runway with long-length brocade printed dresses and avant-garde floppy headwear. Isabel also signed copies of her autobiography, Roots of Style that includes illustrations by her partner-in-crime Ruben Toledo.
