Miami, FL – October 30, 2013 – If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, head to Christian Louboutin in the Design District to view photographer Hugo Tillman’s work. In 2011, Tillman journeyed to India to photograph the progress of poor women turning their lives around through microfinance loans. In collaboration with the the Grameen Foundation, the red-soled shoe brand, also a long-time microfinance supporter, will display Tillman’s work of these women in their villages in its Design District location to help raise awareness about global poverty.

Celebrating the exhibit’s launch, Grameen Foundation and Melissa Medina-Schnur hosted a cocktail event, where proceeds from the sale of the photos went toward the Grameen Foundation. Find the images on display now through November.

Kenneth Cole

Aventura, FL – November 9, 2013 – It wasn’t your average weekend shopping spree at Bloomingdale’s in Aventura Mall last Saturday when Kenneth Cole showed for an appearance to promote his book, “This is a Kenneth Cole Production.” The coffee table book celebrates his 30-year fashion career, as well as social engagements the brand has hosted and endorsed throughout the decades. Making the occasion even more momentous, the trip marked Cole’s first-ever time in South Florida. Fashionistas lined up to have the fashion guru sign their copies, whose proceeds went to Amfar, the Foundation for Aids Research. Here, Cole shares his experience with us.

Kenneth Cole

I see this is your first trip to South Florida. We’re happy to have you, but we want to know, what took you so long to get here? What do you plan to do while you are in town? What are you most looking forward to?

Miami is our last stop on our five-city book tour so I will be visiting and speaking at both University of Miami and Miami International Art & Design, in addition I’m doing a Public Appearance at Bloomingdale’s Aventura. I love and welcome the opportunity to talk to young people about what I wish I knew when I was at their stage in their journey and what I wish someone had told me. I personally enjoy talking with students, which I don’t get to do very often. They inspire me as a designer, a father, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist. So, we thought the book tour helped expand this effort and reach even more students.

Tell me about the book. How long did you work on it?

The book is a look back on the brand’s journey and the impact is has made on people. We wanted to do a book that was a “biography of the brand” and to celebrate our 30th anniversary. We wanted to share our journey through art and let the images tell the story. It really hasn’t been told this way before. Also, we wanted it told by an outsider. Having Lisa Birnbach work with me on telling the story gave it a fresh perspective. We have been telling our own story for years the same way. So, she was interested in getting the untold pieces through our interviews. It helped lead me in a different direction at times and helped me remember things and reveal more information.

The process of putting the book together was challenging and took a great deal of time. It was very cluttered in the beginning, because we had 30 years of images to sift through, and we had to keep cutting. But once we narrowed down the artwork—it became a different book. Less is definitely more in this case.

What is your favorite aspect of the book?

It’s the first fashion book with augmented reality. It was an innovative way to provide more content. The story isn’t just stagnant images, but rather you are able to see behind-the-scenes footage. The strategy was to have the book be a “production.” We wanted to offer customers an innovative experience and exclusive content.

How did you get into fashion?

My father was in the shoe business and most of my early days were spent in shoe factories where I learned the business from an early age.

Thus far, what has been your most rewarding experience?

In 1997 I received the Humanitarian Award from the CFDA. This was the first time ever they awarded and recognized someone for that. It was at this point that I realized what I was doing was accepted, appreciated and respected.

Let’s talk about fall fashion, what’s one item everyone in South Florida needs in their closet?

Everyone should own a great leather jacket or a pair of dark denim.

What is your favorite look for fall?

We really like the bomber jacket this season. There’s something fresh and modern about this cropped style, and it looks great if you wear it with longer shirts or knits. We like that play on proportions

What can we look forward to for spring fashion-wise?

Our spring collection is all about mixing high and low street wear elements with traditional tailoring, a new modern take on sportswear.

What pieces should we start investing in now for spring?

Knee-high gladiator sandal.

What trend would you love to see go away forever? Which trend would you like to resurrect?

Fashion trends always make a comeback, that’s what makes fashion so great, what’s “out” is not really “out” forever.

Q&A: Keren Craig of Marchesa

Jessica Santiago & Keren Craig

Bal Harbour, FL – November 15, 2013 – They are the women behind the stunning gowns labeled Marchesa. Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig have long owned the red carpet during awards season. And their gowns, with lace detail, posh fabrics and stunning silhouettes, are a go-to for celebs looking to capture the attention of the paparazzi. But the duo isn’t just relegated to Hollywood soirees. The launch of their first contemporary line, Marchesa Voyage, earlier this year means the brand is now dressing for daytime as well as the most incredible evenings out. Pulling inspiration from the sleek and sexy era of the ‘70s, the two said the line was created to fill a void in their own closets. Craig admits when she isn’t decked out in a gown, she gladly dresses up in her latest creations. Yet she still has a love affair with her stunning frocks, which is why she headed to Neiman Marcus at Bal Harbour Shops last week to debut the spring 2014 and resort collections. Taking a page from fashions bygone but extremely glamorous days, Craig introduced her latest offering, filled with stunning gowns in metallic trims, lace-adorned bodices and flowing skirts that rival wedding dresses. Here, we catch up with Craig to find out what she most loves from her own line, as well as what we can expect for seasons to come.

Keren Craig & Jessica Santiago

How did you get into design?

I studied design. Georgina Chapman and I actually studied design at Chelsea Art College when we were both 18, and then we both went off and did degrees at different art colleges. I studied fashion textiles. Georgina studied costume design. I feel like for both of us it has always been in our bones.

You have a lot of metallics in this collection. Was that your inspiration?

We looked at a Victorian curiosity box, so that was really our inspiration. It’s a melting pot of different eras, different ideas. We have a little metallic, layering pieces, bias slips from the ‘20s and ‘30s, and we also looked at ‘50s silhouettes. It’s really a melting pot. A lot of metallic laces and a lot of laces for the bras and underwear in the pieces from the runway show, as well.

What’s your favorite era to pull inspiration from?

It’s so hard to say. I think it changes every season. It’s really how you are feeling at the time. I love the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘50s. It’s about glamour and romantic aesthetics. We actually launched our contemporary line with a lot of inspiration from the ‘70s.

When it comes to awards season, you are the go-to. You’ve dressed a million celebs, but who has been your most favorite to dress?

I think for us one of our most exciting times was when we dressed Sandra Bullock for the Oscars, and she won the Oscar in our dress.

What did that feel like?

It was the most incredible feeling. I honestly didn’t know she was going to win. She is an incredible actress. Georgina was actually there and when I was watching it we felt like we won it, too.

When did you know you hit the big time? What was that defining moment?

As a designer I think the best feeling that you can have is to see someone out and about at an event or party who has bought your dress. Not someone who has borrowed it, but someone who has gone out and loved your piece enough to buy it. I think that is such a great feeling. Once that happened we were like, “Oh, this is really happening.”

When you aren’t wearing your things who do you most love to wear?

The good thing about the contemporary line is that now I have things to wear because we have daytime. I wear a lot of vintage but now we have the Marchesa Voyage line I wear that every day. I’m very excited about that. We came up with the idea because we couldn’t find pieces we wanted to wear, so we made them instead.

What do you like to do when you are in Miami?

I love to go to Casa Tua, it’s my favorite restaurant. I like to go to Soho house, but I’m not staying there. We always stay at The Tides. It’s our go-to hotel in Miami. I love going to the beach, the shops. I’m going to The Webster today. I haven’t been yet.

If we are looking toward what we should purchase for spring next year, what is the one quintessential item every Miami girl needs?

We were talking about the metallic lace, I think it needs to be a metallic lace piece in silver or gold. We have both.

And where would we wear it?

To a fabulous event and if you haven’t got a fabulous event to go to, you need to throw a fabulous event to wear it to.

Give us a glimpse into next fall

We are working on it now. Literally, we have the idea but things change so much—it’s a very organic process. We work about six months in advance, but we actually have our first meeting with out stylist, Alex White, on Monday so we will have a much clearer idea on Monday. Like I said, it’s very organic how it happens. There may be a million ideas that go on the board, but in time, it goes in a slightly different direction.

What’s your favorite piece?

For the collection out now it’s the gold lace dress. I just put my order in for that one. It’s definitely one of the ones that stand out for me.

Bal Harbour, FL – November 20, 2013 – Last week, Sergio Rossi Bal Harbour turned the big 1-0. To celebrate, the brand threw a cocktail party and dinner with Criselda Breene, George Lindemann, Sarah Harrelson and Christina Getty hosting the fete. Guests at the now decade-old store sipped drinks and shopped the latest collection of stunning shoes, which include this season’s military-style knee boots, purple pumps and architecturally sound booties. Upon shopping the well-heeled soles, a percentage of proceeds from the evening went to the Bass Museum of Art. It was definitely a night to kick up your heels.

Miami, FL – November 21, 2013 - It’s barely even Thanksgiving, but when it comes to fashion, we’re all thinking vacation. It’s resort season. And that was the focus at Scoop Bal Harbour when Marisa Toccin, Michele Erez, Jillian Posner, Amy Hollub, Arlene Chaplin and Lydia Touzet hosted the resort collection preview for Kaufman Franco. With whites, greens, metallic and yellow hues rounding out the collection, it reminded us all that those getaway days aren’t too far away.

Art Basel 2012 Retrospective

50-IMG_02841

Every December, Miami transforms from a tropical paradise of under-the-sun fun, nightlife and dining to an artistic cultural hub. At the heart of the movement: Art Basel. Now in its 12 year, the weeklong celebration of all things art is upon us. From Miami Beach to the Design District, Midtown to Wynwood and back to the beach again, it’s a week of art for as far as the eye can see, soirees that go until the wee hours of the morn, pop up shops, restaurants, bars, concerts—it’s Basel in all its glory. And there is nothing else in the world quite like it. In case you’ve forgotten what all the fuss is about, here’s a look back at Art Basel 2012.

We’ve highlighted some of our favorite events, and with them come unforgettable moments, like Andre Balaz at Chez Andre, our first steps into Untitled and the garden hose piece that greeted us at the door. And there was Le Baron at Pearl were the party was so packed dancing on your neighbor was part of the celebration. Who could forget the glamour of Monceler’s anniversary and Pharrell in his camo suit? The unveiling of ShopBazaar sent fashionistas into a frenzy, and Silencio’s guest list was like walking into the Oscars. Are you prepared to do it all over again, Miami? Ready or not it’s Art Basel 2013.

Design Miami

It’s the interior design art fair that will leave you longing to revamp your entire abode, in some of the most beautiful, most functional, most far out design elements on the planet—think bubble-blowing light fixtures. Design Miami brings together esteemed and emerging designers, curators, gallerists, collectors and celebs—of course. Last year, Kanye West, Terry Richardson, Pharrell Williams, Craig Robins, Martha Stewart, Will Ferrell and Chelsea Handler all got a glimpse of the wonder and beauty inside of the Design Miami tent.

Crash the Ball

One of the most highly anticipated events of this Basel is the opening of Perez Art Museum Miami, formerly known as MAM. And one of the highlights of last year’s Basel was the official MAM Gala afterparty, Crash the Ball, which, as it turns out, was the last official after party of the gala. Held at Miami-Dade Cultural Center, where the museum called home for 29 years, as a tribute to the museum’s final days in its former digs before its move to Museum Park, the party drew in the likes of gallery owners, artists, socialites and world-renowned DJs. Guests danced under the stars to the beats of NY DJ duo Tanlines, sipped cocktails at the glowing white bars, posed for pics in the photo booth, which were displayed in real time on giant screens, and took snack breaks to savor James Beard-nominated pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith’s signature desserts. It was a farewell party to remember.

Chez Andre

Andre Balaz has long had a hand in Miami’s scene. Basel was no exception. The hotelier created Chez Andre, a three-day rock ’n’ roll karaoke club for Art Basel 2012. With the likes of The Strokes, Julian Lennon and Andre Balaz himself, with Chelsea Handler in tow, it was a party perfectly in tune with Basel-mania.

Remo Ruffini & Moncler 60th Anniversary

It was the beacon of light glowing at the 1111 Parking Garage that first caught passersby attention, as the space above Miami Beach transformed itself into the uber exclusive Moncler 60th anniversary party. Guests, adorned in puffy white coats (the gift for the evening), mixed and mingled with the A-list after dinner. The event, which drew in the likes of Paris and Nicky Hilton, Pharrell, Karolina Kurkova and Bruce Weber, was one of Basel’s more posh soirees, complete with smoke machines, Hollywood lighting and a guest list that most stood zero chance of penetrating.

Haute Living VIP Dinner

Haute Living’s Art Basel issue, featuring Daphne Guinness on its cover, became the foundation for a serious Basel fete. Honoring the cover girl, the magazine hosted an upscale affair at Villa Azur with the likes of Martha Stewart, Karolina Kurkova, Russell Simmons, Ray Allen, Juwan and Jenine Howard, Lea Black, Marysol Patton, Stephen Dorff and Dj Irie all in attendance.

UNTITLED. Vernissage

An art fair in the sand—we all knew it would happen sooner or later. Turns out, it was sooner than later when Untitled celebrated its first year at Basel 2012. The forward-thinking art fair in fact made its mark as the world’s first art fair on the beach, to be exact. Cuban-born and Miami-raised Omar Lopez-Chahoud curated the fair, which focused on approximately 50 international galleries.

Sagamore Art Basel Brunch

This annual coveted event, with roots dating back to 2001, brought together six museums, including the Bass Museum of Art, Lowe Art Museum, Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Art at FIU and the Wolfsonian-FIU, to connect some of the biggest art collectors, gallery owners, artists and more at the Cricket and Martin W. Taplin-hosted event. It’s one of the hottest tickets at Basel, if you’re lucky enough to make the list.

Silencio at FDR

If ever the pop up had its place in the sun, it’s Basel. Case in point: Parisian nightclub Silencio at the Delano Hotel, where the guest list was an A-list only affair with guests like Demi Moore, Jeremy Piven, Paris Hilton, Diddy, Pharrel and so on. Chances are you probably didn’t get to experience it first hard. But these pics should fill you in on all the glorious details.

VH1 You Oughta Know + SCOPE Miami

One of the greatest side effects of Art Basel’s stay in Miami are the concerts it brings with it. At the top of that list was last year’s VH1 You Oughta Know + SCOPE Miami event with Metric and The Dolls: Mia Moretti Caitlin Moe. The official after party of Scope Miami, the private, outdoor event marked VH1’s first entry into the art space. With art and music fueling the event, it was enough ear and eye candy to keep the masses wondering what’s on tap this year.

Le Baron

Speaking of parties, Le Baron became the nightly Basel event you had to peg down in order to attend. From Rec Room to Nikki Beach to Jelsomino to the Orchid, the roaming Parisian nightclub was an “it” spot everywhere it went. Drawing in an A-list crowd meant the guest list was a tough nut to crack, so if you didn’t get in, here’s a look at what you missed. Better luck finding and fete-ing at Le Baron this year.

The Design District

While not an actual event, but more of a hub for endless events, the Design District made its mark during Basel. Magazine-fueled pop-up shops, block parties, exhibitions, it was the place to be, be seen and see it all. Some of the most memorable events of last year include ShopBazaar, which made the pages of Harper’s Bazaar shop-able. Also, the Absolut Block Party, which served as the kickoff to Chez Andre. Think DJs, pingpong tables, juice bars and bands. In terms of art, it was Raneytown by Rebecca Raney at Primary Projects that took the cake. Her bold, colorful, larger-than-life works brought the whimsey and cool to the District.

Art Basel Closing Night

It’s always a pleasure to watch it come and a bit of a bittersweet relief to watch it go. To celebrate the closing of Art Basel, The Moore Building’s Rooftop Garden transformed into a pop-up cocktail bar from First Trust, with mixologists Steve Livigni and Pablo Moix, the forces behind La Descarga at Harvard & Stone of L.A. whipping up drinks to toast the official end of Basel. But they weren’t just any cocktails slung in a glass, as both mixologists were nominated for the 2012 Best American Cocktail Bar by Takes of the Cocktail and Pour Vous, one of CNN’s 2012 Top 10 Best New Bars in America, as well as winner of the 2012 Best Modern Cocktails by LA Weekly. Let’s just say last call was as jarring as the end of Basel itself.

Design Talks With Pharrell Williams

For the Friday installment of Design Talks at DesignMiami/, DACRA CEO and President Craig Robins sat down with mogul Pharrell[Williams] for an intimate conversation about Pharrell’s creative crossover from music to fashion, furniture and soon film. There was a mutual respect between the men, an understood air of relatability and an uncanny sense of comradery. And while their creative interests continue to feed off of one another, those of us stationed in Miami are happy to reap the benefits of the relationship, and having Robins at the helm of Miami’s Design District.

What to Wear during Art Basel

Helen Lasichanh & Pharrell Williams at Design Miami  Preview & Vernissage on December 4, 2012

That LBD and your favorite Choos? No, those simply won’t do when it comes to dressing for Art Basel Miami Beach. You’re going to need to step it up a notch—times ten. This is, after all, the biggest event to hit Miami, bringing celebs, A-listers, designers, photographers, editors and artists from around the world to our little plot on the sand. It’s time to dress to impress.

Planning a Basel wardrobe is no easy task: Pieces that transition from day-to-night, shoes meant for walking endless miles of art fairs, something to catch that photographer’s eye … This is anything but your typical outfit selection. It’s Basel, baby. And you need to stand out. So, go big, go bold.

From Wynwood hipsters kicking it in a mishmash of fabrics and prints to celebs donning haute couture, Art Basel is an exercise in fashion risks, a gamble in garment selection. Don’t be afraid to add something to make your look stand out. Don’t shy away from interesting textures. Rock those pants that look like you’ve hit a flood zone. Put on a hat. Layer that jewelry. Wear that dress you’ve been saving for a special occasion. Say yes to vintage. Toss on some gold lame, because this is it. And the art of dressing has never been more appreciated than it is at Art Basel.

Here’s a flashback at some of the standout pieces from last year’s Basel bonanza. We still can’t get over how 365 days ago Paris and Nicky Hilton were rocking what we’re currently craving.

Miami, FL – November 15, 2013 – If there is anything women love, it’s wine and shoes. Keeping that concept in mind, Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation hosted its 2014 Wine, Women & Shoes kick-off event presented by Roger Vivier at Dan and Tina Carlo’s home. The event, which allows women of all generation to slip into their most daring heels and band together for shopping and fun in support of Miami Children’s Hospital, will take place on February 6, 2014 at the Coral Gables Country Club. The kick-off started at the pool, where VIP guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, while President and CEO of Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation Lucy Morillo-Agnetti welcomed those in attendance. Afterward, chairs Criselda Breene and Carola Pimentel talked about the upcoming 3rd Wine Women and Shoes event, which is officially at capacity, with three months to go. In anticipation of the big day, the teams acknowledged WWS High Heel Presenting Sponsor, Roger Vivier, and Marie Ecot, director of PR for Roger Vivier. It was a well-heeled step in the right direction for a good cause.
