Miami Beach, FL – January 17, 2014 – Many would consider lunch and shopping as the ideal girls-day outing, and one of the few things that can top that is when it’s all for an amazing cause. On Friday afternoon, Criselda Breene hosted a luncheon in front of the Roger Vivier boutique at Bal Harbour Shops to benefit Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation in anticipation of the upcoming 3rd Annual Wine, Women & Shoes Gala. The 3rd Annual Wine, Women & Shoes Gala will take place on February 6th at the Coral Gables Country Club. After guests chatted and dined on delicious bites, they moved inside the boutique to get they’re shop on. Roger Vivier, as the High Heel Presenting Sponsor, has offered to devote a percentage of sales from the Roger Vivier Bal Harbour Shops boutique through February 6th to benefit the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation. The foundation’s mission helps to raise awareness and funds for the Miami Children’s Hospital in the effort to ensure the health and happiness of children everywhere. The event was a great success as the ladies picked out some fabulous pieces to add to their wardrobe, all for an incredible cause.

When did you know you were destined for a career in the Fashion industry?

I realized I was destine for a fashion career when I was far more interested at a very early age in the way people dressed and how they decorated their homes than I was with my toys. My mother tells stories of me putting outfits together at the age of 6 on her bed complete with shoes, jewelry and a handbag. Although my interest in fashion and style was probably from the time I could first pronounce “Vogue magazine.”

What role does Neiman Marcus play in the fashion world?

Neiman Marcus is the premier luxury retailer in the United States with a global presence recognized around the world. I have recently visited China and Australia bringing the style of Neiman Marcus to customers and fashion influencers abroad. We travel the globe in search of the special, the superlative and the chicest items that a customer will love as much as we do when we discover them. Neiman Marcus is about the emotional, the passion of beautiful things that enrich your life.

What sets Neiman Marcus apart from other high-end department stores?

The customer experience on-line and in store is certainly one of the many differentiators that makes Neiman Marcus a very special place to shop.  We love our customers!  The customers are what makes us great and makes us want to be the best  retailer we can be.  Neiman Marcus is a heritage company that enjoys generations of customers who shop with us year after year.  Great Grandmothers, Grandmothers, Mothers, Daughters, Grandchildren all tell stories of their first time coming to Neiman Marcus, it is very special that we are part of so many families history making memories.

5.5-Ken-Downing-with-models10

What are all the aspects of your position as Fashion Director?

The role of Fashion Director is very multi faceted. I lead the buying teams to the trends, styles and ideas that we as a company will embrace each season. As the global ambassador, I am the fashion and style face and voice of Neiman Marcus. I interface with fashion designers, scour the market for new and emerging talent, help in developing new fashion talent, interface with magazine editors and social media, and on may occasions appear on television. In fact, you can see me along side of Anna Wintour of Vogue and Diane von Furstenberg on the new TV series on the Ovation network chronicling the CFDA/Vogue fashion Fund that I am a judge. You can also read my writings in the Neiman Marcus The BOOK  where I discuss fashion trends as well as interview the fashion talents that we represent at Neiman Marcus, as well as monthly email blasts on style and trends.  if I knew I was going to be a full time writer I would have paid more attention in English and Creative writing classes in school. And that just what I do before noon on most days!

Ken Downing

6-Ken-Downing-speaking

How do you go about choosing trends for any given season?

Selecting trends each season is part science and part gut instinct. Certainly the runways of the world inform my ideas, I am also tuned into what is happening on the streets, in Hollywood on the Red Carpet, in the world of music, interior design, food, art, the world of design is very democratic in this modern world. Everything inspires everything!

What are some of the newest trends we are going to see for the Spring & Summer 2014?

Trends I am obsessing about currently for the coming Spring 2014 season include: Pink in every  shade from Blush to shocking. White! and white with black backpacks are back and super cool. Summer booties, stacks of cuffs on the wrist, and total denim wardrobes. Wearing denim head to toe looks cool. Mixing dark, faded, distressed all at the same time is what makes the modern denim wardrobe.

10-SB_0000460

11-SB_0000457

As a trendsetter, where do you see Neiman Marcus in the next 5 years, long term?

As a trendsetter, Neiman Marcus will continue to lead with great style and trends that are relevant to the way people live their lives. Relevancy is everything to keeping ahead. Authenticity is what I believe to be an important factor in the world of fashion. You have to walk the walk if you are going to talk the talk.

13-SB_0000456

We know being Fashion Director include many different departments, which is your favorite to work with and why?

I have the job of my dreams, asking me to pick my favorite department is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. I love all the worlds of fashion and design because they all rely on one another to keep them exciting.

14-SB_0000462

Which fashion house never fails to impress you?

I have many fashion house I love and many of their Creative Directors are my friends, although I never let my love of the person get in the way of me looking at a collection with an keen eye for what a customer will love. Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, Jack and Laz of Proenza Schouler, Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Victoria Beckham, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, Phoebe Philo of Celine, Hedi Slimane at the house of Saint Laurent, Peter Pilotto, Erdem, Christopher Kane, Joseph Altuzarra, Tom Ford…..please don’t get me in trouble because I will forget a collection I love and I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.

How did you first get your start in design?

Design was something I always had a dedication and passion for, but the business side is what helped it evolve over time. I began going to school for business merchandising which eventually led to becoming a buyer for boutiques in Los Angeles, so I learned a lot about the business by starting with that. Then I had the courage to go out and start my own line, which was quite an adventure because the first store that came in was Bergdorf Goodman. They really liked the collection and they told me that it had potential, so then I sort of started believing that maybe this is a business, maybe there is something more to it.

Do you think success in design is having knack for drawing or more of an eye for style?

I think it’s more of an eye for style. I’m very creative, I love color and textures, and just glamorous sexy things; that’s just sort of my aesthetic appeal. It has been a dream come true and an incredibly interesting journey.

Evening wear has a tendency to make women look older, so I’m always looking for something youthful and refreshing to give it a fresh outtake.

What was the process that led to your clothing being in high-end retail stores?

I was very focused from the beginning. I wanted to do evening wear and there was no ifs or buts about it. I was very determined. It was a matter of getting the right sales team together for my company and having them help guide me. Getting my clothing into places like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman are dreams come true and they are stores I have admired since first coming to the US.

_7-_DSC0238

You are from Romania originally, has your culture had an influence on your brand?

Of course, my culture and where I come from has definitely had an influence brand. Growing up I watched my grandmother sew threads by hand. She would sew these national costumes with gold leaf and really detailed embroideries, as well as beautiful textures and fabrics, so growing up around it definitely contributed to my design technique today.

_8-Kiki-Barth

Kiki Barth

You dress tons of celebrities and you’re all over the red carpet, is there someone you would love to dress but haven’t had the opportunity yet?

I think some of the dream celebrities I would want to dress, I already have. Blake Lively, there was a moment in Gossip Girl where she wore one of my tunics that really set in for me because Gossip girl was huge and she’s such a fashion icon and beautiful girl. Eva Longoria and Carrie Underwood were also memorable. I had Emmy and Golden Globe nominees wear my gowns and it’s been such a dream come true. I’m a great supporter of dressing the red carpet and I could only hope to have more opportunities.

_9-Sarah-Barnes

Sarah Barnes

Where do you look for inspiration for each collection?

The inspiration is different each season. I love to travel a lot and do it quite frequently. I also get creativity from embroidery houses that send me swatches. I’m a researcher, always reading fashion books, going to vintage shops, you name it I’m constantly on the look out. I feel that is one of my strong points, and that’s how I work so well with my design team. I train them on how to look for that “new” feminine embroidery. Evening wear can have a tendency to make women look older, so I’m always looking for something youthful and refreshing to give it a fresh outtake.

_10-_DSC0411

What do you keep in mind when designing for a woman’s body type?

It’s important that the silhouettes are simple, yet have a really well constructed corset and lines that are very in-tune with the woman’s body. The customer is very sexy, glamorous and wants to stand out, which is also my personal style.

_11-_DSC0404

_12-_DSC0427

Your evening wear has brought you so much success; do you have any future plans to venture in other areas of design?

I would eventually love to accessorize my dresses with bags, and not necessarily just evening bags. I would like to design bags that could cross between evening and daytime because I feel that it’s kind of a niche that hasn’t been tapped yet. I would like to do sunglasses and lipstick as well, I love color so I would love to venture into something that supports and represents the lifestyle of my brand.

_13-Kiki-Barth2

Kiki Barth

What is your favorite fabric to work with?

I really love embroidery, embroidery laces, tulle with embroidery; these are some of my signature features that people look for when shopping for Loren Sarbu. A sexy cocktail dress that has color, beautiful tulle applique and materials that are mixed, adds that glamorous luxe to the evening.

_14-_DSC0276

What has been the most memorable moment of your career thus far?

To be quite honest, I am overwhelmingly excited to finally be a part of Neiman Marcus. It was a target of mine from the beginning, and like any business it takes numerous steps to get here, so to finally have my clothes here tops my list for most one of the most memorable moments.

What kind of women is seen wearing your clothing?

A woman who wears my clothes is ageless. It’s all about glamour and sex appeal. It is important for the woman to stand out while remaining elegant at the same time. Behind the women are personality and an eye for color. Someone who’s wearing my clothing is really strong and wants to stand out; she wouldn’t just be the guest of the party.

Q&A: Stephen Webster’s Fly By Night

Stephen Webster

Bal Harbour, FL – January 30, 2014 – Creating big, bold pieces, Stephen Webster’s work stands apart from his contemporaries for its unusual use of coloured gems and exotic designs that blend exquisite technical expertise with modern culture. Guests joined Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour and jewelry designer Stephen Webster for an evening featuring his magical new collection Fly By Night and a viewing of his silver as well as his distinctly masculine men’s collection. Green up-light enhanced the Precious Jewels Salon creating a nature/forest ambiance as branches and mossy greens filled the vitrines with the jewels in order to further showcase the theme of the Fly By Night collection. The collection was inspired by nocturnal winged creatures found within enchanting forests. Delicious bites and champagne were provided for attendees to enjoy as models showcased the gems and the men’s line. Event hosts Greg Melvin and Paolo Ambu, from BABALU Miami/Palm Beach, joined to help bring a fashionable VIP crowd for the evening. We were able to catch up with Webster as he gave us a look into his rise to becoming one of the most diverse designers in the game, where his inspirations come from as well as how he plans to continue his legacy.

_3-Fernanda-Uesler1

Fernanda Uesler

How did you first get your start in jewelry design?

I sort of stumbled upon it. I went to art school when I was 16 to be a fashion designer and I quickly learned that I didn’t like it as far as I could see because it was all about girls and sewing machines and I wasn’t prepared for that. But, while I was in art school I discovered jewelry and that was it really. I was only 16 and had never done anything else. That was 37 years ago and I’ve been doing it ever since.

_4-Fernanda-Uesler2

Tell us about the process of finding inspiration for your collections?

I get my inspiration from many places all over the world. I’d like to say there is a sense of fun in all of my collections and I think it shows. Each collection looks like it has a story behind it and that’s purposeful. I try to make pieces that feel like there’s something more to them than just basic diamonds or gold. I’ve always wanted my designs to be something that looked a bit different, like a lobster on your finger. That is our niche and has kept me totally interested in this business. I love gems, and I love finding things that aren’t obvious. In the end jewelry is jewelry and everyone has their own reason for buying it but I think my place is for people to have it fit, feel good and glamorous while also feeling that they’re having a bit of fun with it; its sort of half the story.

_5-Carol-G

Carol G

Do you ever find it hard to find inspiration after so many years?

I know I can take anything and turn it into a story. A poem, visual reference, or a piece of music, so many things help with inspiration. It’s very rare that we say something isn’t working.

_6-Carol-G1

I try to make pieces that feel like there’s something more to them than just basic diamonds or gold.

Stephen Webster

_7-_DSC0526

What are some of your favorite stones and metals to work with?

Right now there is a peridot that is so extraordinary and is not like a normal peridot, which I find fascinating. That peridot hasn’t been enhanced or messed with; it’s gorgeous straight from the ground. When I find gems like that they become my favorite for the day. As far as metal is concerned, it definitely is going to be 18 karat gold. I’ve worked with every kind of metal you name it but I come back to gold because there’s something about gold that really works; it does everything you want it to do that some other metals just don’t.

_8-_DSC0493

What would you say sets you apart from other jewelry designers in the industry?

I suppose it’s provocative but also a bit progressive. When we were first started getting a lot of attention and recognition it was because I was doing something that was absolutely not out there, it caused a stir. I remember when I did my first couture show in Las Vegas everybody wanted to write about it because it felt different. Those pieces were a little bit left field but became mainstream. I wouldn’t have had the same attention if I didn’t have that moment. Something like that puts you on the map. It is important to have a line that’s different than everybody else’s.

_9-_DSC0496

There’s something about gold that really works; it does everything you want it to do that some other metals just don’t.

Stephen Webster

What can we expect from your collection for Spring 2014?

My collection that will launch in the spring is called Albion Rose. It was inspired by a William Blake poem about mythological giants that came to England and rose out of out of this sea. It has a take on “britishness” that has nothing to do with flags or jacks, it’s a take on about being British. The collection is wonderfully abstract.

_DSC0499

What kind of person wears your jewelry?

I met Cookie today, she’s 97 and was here on the very first day Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour opened thirty something years ago. She bought herself a present today, a ring of mine. She was wearing a skull and crossbones necklace. She was incredibly alive and brilliant. I only mention her because my clients are very widespread. It’s not about being hip or young; it’s about attracting people who are simply intrigued.

_DSC0505

Tell me about your collection your showcasing today.

My current collection that I am debuting today at Neiman Marcus is a about a fantasy creature called Fly by Night. It is based off of this sort of butterfly, moth creature, something like that gives me enough to make a collection. It’s amazing how people look for things that they sort of want to recognize something in it. That was just part of a collection I did of a fantasy forest.

_DSC0512

What has been the most memorable moment in your career thus far?

Last year I got a medal from the Queen, which was pretty cool. I received the medal for mentoring young jewelry designers called Rock Vault where I brought them around everywhere and introduced them to my world as a designer. It’s really great that we now we have so many young jewelers wanting to get involved which is an amazing thing because that means it has worked. To be recognized for that was incredible. Being with my family, being at Buckingham palace, receiving a medal was really awesome.

_DSC0517

What do you find most rewarding in your design career?

Being in a position where we have a business that employs 90 people including my original team is most rewarding. Although the business aspect is not all fun and games all the time, we have a nice spirit in the business. They enjoy working here as much as I enjoy them and that’s so rewarding to me. They also find it rewarding because we sort have built this business together.

_DSC0519

You’ve taught these young designers so much, have you learned anything from them?

Yes, I love how creative young people are. I don’t know if it is necessarily being taught or more about being surprised constantly by the creativity of other people. I think what I like about that is now there is a place for nearly all of them.

_DSC0521

What do you think the future holds for you in this industry?

It’s quite interesting actually because it is changing which I’m happy about because I was right there in the earlier days when was I was hoping for a change. Industries are slow to change. There is a traditional jeweler and there is a place for that no question about it, but at the time nearly everyone was a traditional jeweler so now there’s many other possibilities. I’m always surprising my clients. You’ve got to do something different to make it in the jewelry industry. It’s now possible with jewelry to totally think out of the box, and many jewelers don’t think out of the box.

Miami, FL – February 6, 2014 - Nearly 500 of Miami’s most philanthropic and fashion-forward ladies gathered to celebrate the 3rd Annual Wine, Women & Shoes Gala presented by Roger Vivier Paris benefiting the children and families at Miami Children’s Hospital. The sold-out soiree took place on Thursday afternoon at the Coral Gables Country Club and raised nearly half a million dollars for Miami Children’s Hospital and its world-class pediatric healthcare. This year’s event was even more special, as Roger Vivier Paris, the fashion house credited with the design of the first stiletto heel, served as presenting sponsor. Attendees were treated to a runway show with fashions from Neiman Marcus Coral Gables and a creative shoe contest. The ladies also enjoyed delectable wine tasting, a one-of-a-kind silent auction, and a delicious lunch. One of the most unique aspects of the afternoon was the participation of the “Shoe Guys,” who displayed the latest in women’s fashion on silver platters for everyone’s enjoyment. The highlight of the luncheon was the moving story of Harrison, a 12-year-old whose life was saved by Miami Children’s Hospital Emergency Department and the talented staff of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. This year’s outstanding sponsors also included Tina & Dan Carlo, U by Kotex,  4Beauty Aesthetics, MOMO Italy, Premier Beverage Company, Everest Capital, Karla Conceptual Event Experiences, Miami Heat Charitable Fund, Menu Men, Inc., Wells Fargo, Brownie Brittle, Clear Channel Media & Entertainment, Ocean Drive Magazine and Social Miami.

Miami, FL – February 15, 2014 – It was an evening of creative minds coming together as Corzo Tequila hosted the Miami edition of the Corzo Collective Dinner Series on Saturday night at Del Toro’s Wynwood Headquarters. Celebrating Del Toro’s Matthew Chevellard and Spinello Projects’ TYPOE, attendees were styled in Del Toro shoes to match the table’s custom design by TYPOE. Chef Henry Hane paired a delicious food menu to compliment Corzo cocktails handcrafted by Bacardi Portfolio Manager, Gabe Urrutia.

1.5-IMG_0015

The sculpture I used for the centerpiece of the dinner is a hand carved bust made from foam. It is covered in resin so it is hardened, but still light enough to move from place to place. It is almost 13 feet tall. I wanted to use something esthetically engaging and a little larger than life for the event.

Shortly after, Trump arrived on stage in the all-new 2014 Cadillac CTS and introduced the fashion showcase that included a runway presentation of the designer’s collection that is currently available in stores. After the show wrapped, Donald Trump made a surprise appearance to introduce the reigning Miss Universe and Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler, while she cheered along with spectators. Grey Goose Vodka, recently announced as the official spirit of the PGA Tour, served cocktails to show-goers who lounged on couches and mingled throughout the crowd. Other notables who were in attendance include: Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Hannah Ferguson, Adriana de Moura, Vincent de Paul, Heather Thompson and headline act for the Cadillac Championship’s concert on Saturday, Travie McCoy.

Miami, FL – March 12, 2014 - The Bass Museum of Art, one of Miami Beach’s key cultural landmarks, along with a select group of the city’s leading arts patrons, socialites and tastemakers hosted its annual fundraiser, “A Night at the Museum,” on Wednesday evening. Sponsored by Vogue México and Latin-America and in part by Escada, the soiree attracted more than 500 guests who received a private preview of Vanitas: Fashion and Art. While enjoying cocktails, refreshments, Chateau D’Esclans rosé at the Escada Escape Lounge and beats by DJ Mauricio Parra, attendees explored the institution’s latest exhibition, Vanitas: Fashion and Art. Continuing its mission to “inspire and educate by exploring the connections between our historical collections and contemporary art” Vanitas: Fashion and Art explores the theme of vanitas as expressed in avant garde ready-to-wear and haute couture as well as in contemporary paintings, sculptures, industrial design and new media. The exhibition included works by contemporary designers and artists. The installation also highlighted rare examples of the Bass Museum of Art’s remarkable collection of historic frames by incorporating them spatially in the installation to create a dynamic and interactive engagement of artworks and viewer. Attendees were also given the opportunity to participate in a thrilling silent auction including art, experiences and luxury items.
